Well,
I’m not the kind of person that pays so much attention to the ground when
walking. Actually, I hardly ever see it. That’s why I was really surprised when
I read in blogs of other people living in Germany that there are several golden
paving stones all around Cologne like the ones in the picture above.
To
be honest, although I had been living here for two weeks I hadn’t noticed them.
And it’s funny because even if you don’t pay so much attention you will see
them, in groups or alone.
The
fact is that they show the names of those anonymous people who were victims of
the Nazism and were murdered just for being homosexual, Jewish or any king of “non
grata” person for Hitler followers. They are exactly in the place where these
persons once lived and you can find them in the most of the cities in Germany
(or even abroad, like in Italy).
I
think that the initiative, carried out by the artist Gunter Demning, is really
beautiful to remember us that we can learn of our past mistakes thanks to the
History and also to remember those people who suffered the worst part of the
war. But I can’t avoid to sigh bitterly each time I see them…
